Hornady's plain round balls are pure lead, generally speaking, although they do make .485 "hardballs" put up in blister packs with a little plastic sabot or cup for each ball. As far as I know, their round balls in the red boxes are all pure lead.In other words, a tablespoon of stain to a tablespoon of alcohol. With this thinned stain, use a small, fine hair paint brush about 3/4" to 1" wide and paint the stain onto the wood. Apply the stain "with the grain". I use Barricade- formerly marketed as Sheath- for rust protection after cleaning with kitchen tap hot water and dish soap to clean barrel and lock. A cleaning patch is dampened well with Barricade, and rubbed all over the lock and exterior metal parts of the rifle.I built and shot a Deerhunter percussion gun and found it to be very accurate and a delight to carry for an old guy. that rifle has moved on to a grandson and he has always placed in the top 3 and often #1 when shooting it in competitions. If the sights are dove tailed (as were mine), that would be an easy fix.Here is how to do that. Cut the slot just deep enough so the bottom of the base of the lug can be flat and fit on a flat surface on the barrel. So make the flat on the barrel just wide enough for the base of the lug and no more. Yeah, the lock isn't the best, and the plastic stocks on the new ones look and feel pretty crummy, and the sights are just plain old ugly. BUT... they're shooters..
