Start your charges around 45-50 grains of powder. Increase the charge 5 grains at a time until you find what the rifle likes. Consider getting a range rod for loading, use the short starter you have shown in the photo.The bullet is a 507 grain, with a single wrap 20# paper patch. The bullet goes down with a small amount of pressure, but not very much. I was shooting at 100 yards with the first shot 2" from the group with the other 4 shots being in a 1 1/4" group. Although I posted the fact I was blessed with success, I neglected to comment on the sheer power displayed by the round ball I shot. Powder charge. Nitro (hard) card. Shotload. Thin overshot card. Full fiber cushion wad*. *The cushion wad needs to be SATURATED (the wetter and heavier, the better) with oil. I like to use olive oil. The load seems to shine best when used in cylinder bored guns. Drum and nipple breeches are manure from several perspectives. Most modern patent breeches on the factory made guns are designed to be cheap to make and install. After five hours though, it was time to quit for the day. Decorating a Powder Horn is really an individual's own choice.This method will tell you if the flash channel is clear of any debris left over from cleaning and storage. Place a cap on the nipple and point the rifle in a safe direction and pull the trigger. Remove the first cap hull and place another cap. Point the rifle toward the ground. I'm thinking about swapping out the percussion breech plug on one rifle for the flintlock breech plug on another. The flintlock is .50 caliber and the percussion is .58 caliber. When I was a kid, we didn't have fancy pre-made wads. We used pieces of old wasp nest (very good), news paper and even cotton balls. The trick was to pull the cotton balls apart a little bit so that they didn't fly very far. Lubed with a loose beeswax and tallow/olive oil lube they worked well.Jan 23, 2015. #12. J.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for. I saw a brass 1851 in .44 cal. recently (the originals didn't come in .44!) and it looks great. It would be fun to shoot a 1851-style in .44, I'd think.Learned this trick from my father who used to cast fishing sinkers. IMO, it does help with allowing the balls to exit the mould easier. If you have a mold where bullets stick, take 0000 steel wool and gently polish the edges of the cavities. Some use an Exacto knife to gently scrap the edges, but that scares me.One of the most wonderful stocks I had ever held in my hands. The barrel channel was 1 " and 37 " long . Adding another inch to it made it 38" , Perfect for a .62 cal. by 1" longrifle for deer. It too was a tack driver that killed any deer you shot at.
