From there, the C&O Canal Towpath, where mules used to pull barges along the waterway, would bring me over rougher terrain all the way into DC. Built between 1836 and 1850 to bypass five dramatic and cliff-laden horseshoe bends in the nearby Potomac River, the Paw Paw Tunnel was a magnificent feat of engineering for its time. Whether you’re biking the Great Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, or Cumberland to Pittsburgh, the 62 miles of trail between Confluence and Cumberland will be both the most challenging and the most exciting of the trip. This is because of the elevation that you’ll gain (and lose) over this portion of the trail. The decorative iron Bollman Bridge and the 3,294-foot Big Savage Tunnel — longest tunnel on the Great Allegheny Passage — are a short ride away, as well.
